29th BALTIC HERRING Short Film Competion 2023

JURY REPORT

Back to normal

Baltic Herring is a short film competition for filmmakers of the Baltic Sea countries organised for the 29th time. After the rock bottom of last year, now the organisers were happy to notice that short films were made and offered for our competition again – we received alltogether 149 films from 10 different Baltic Sea countries by deadline. There were 69 short films offered from Finland, 27 from Germany and 17 from Sweden. The Polish film schools sent 8 films this year raising the high level of the competition. Also 13 films from Russia were offered. Our strict policy is not to accept any Russian short films made by the state film schools or by the studios cooperating with the aggressive government, which is currently in war against Ukraine. In addition to this there were also 5 films offered from Lithuania, 4 from Norway, 3 from Estonia, 2 from Latvia and 1 short film from Denmark.

30 works were selected into the Baltic Herring competition final 2023. The selection of the Baltic Herring finalists consists of twelve Finnish films, eight German films, three Polish films as well as two Swedish, Russian and Lithuanian short films and one Norwegian short film.
