Baltic Herring Short Film Competition 2025, Rauma
The Baltic Herring Short Film Competition is aimed at residents of the countries bordering the Baltic Sea and will be held this year for the 31st time. The competition features three categories: amateurs, film students, and professionals. All films compete not only for the “Silakka Oscars” within their respective categories but also for the main prize—the Golden Baltic Herring.
By the deadline, a total of 134 submissions were received, of which 126 films from eight different Baltic Sea countries were accepted into the competition. Thirty-three short films made it to the final round. This year, the amateur category turns into a Finland-Sweden match. The student category stands out with a strong presence from German film schools. The professional category includes films from four different countries, featuring, among others, Rauma-born filmmaker Maarit Lalli.
Pre-selection juries, led once again by Martin Zehner, have curated the screening programs for both the public and the international jury. Regardless of category, all competition films are eligible for the main prize, the Golden Baltic Herring. The competition’s ceramic miniature sculptures have been crafted by artist Kirsi Backman. The City of Rauma has supported the event.
The films will be screened for both the jury and the public at Cinema Iso-Hannu on Thursday, August 21, with an additional public screening on Friday, August 22. As always, the audience will have the chance to vote for their favorite. Those who participate in the audience vote will be entered into a draw to win a film-themed prize. The best short films from around the Baltic Sea will be awarded on Saturday, August 23, when the results of the audience vote will also be announced.

Baltic Herring -lyhytelokuvakilpailu on Itämeren rantavaltioiden asukkaille tarkoitettu kilpailu, joka järjestetään tänä vuonna 31. kerran. Kilpailussa on kolme sarjaa, amatöörit, av-koulujen opiskelijat ja ammattilaiset. Kaikki kilpailevat paitsi omasta sarjojensa Silakka-Oscareista myös Golden Baltic Herring -pystistä.
Määräaikaan mennessä ilmoittautumisia saapui 134, joista kilpailuun hyväksyttiin 126 elokuvaa kahdeksasta eri Itämeren maasta. Finaaliin selvitti tiensä tällä 33 lyhytelokuvaa. Amatöörisarjan kilpa käydään tällä kertaa Suomi-Ruotsi maaotteluna. Opiskelijasarjassa pistää silmään saksalaiskoulujen vahva panos. Ammattilaissarjassa mukaan valikoitui elokuvia neljästä eri maasta, mukana mm. raumalaissyntyinen Maarit Lalli.
Esiraadit ovat jälleen valinneet Martin Zehnerin johdolla yleisön ja kansainvälisen tuomariston katsottaviksi esityssarjat. Sarjasta riippumatta kaikki kilpailuelokuvat osallistuvat pääpalkinnon Golden Baltic Herringin tavoitteluun. Kilpailun keraamiset pienoisveistokset on valmistanut Kirsi Backman. Kilpailua on tukenut Rauman kaupunki.
Elokuvat esitetään tuomaristolle ja yleisölle Iso-Hannussa torstaina 21. 8. sekä yleisölle vielä perjantaina 22. 8. Tuttuun tapaan yleisöllä on mahdollisuus valita oma suosikkinsa. Yleisöäänestykseen osallistuneiden kesken arvotaan elokuva-aiheinen palkinto. Itämeren alueen parhaat lyhytelokuvat palkitaan lauantaina 23. 8. jolloin ratkeaa myös yleisöäänestys.
